The ongoing fourth Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground took an intriguing turn on day three on Saturday, with India narrowly avoiding the follow-on. The day was headlined by Nitish Kumar Reddy’s stellar maiden Test century, a gritty knock that showcased determination against a dominant Australian bowling attack. Rain forced early stumps, with India ending the day at 358-9, still trailing Australia’s first-innings total of 474.

Earlier, Australia’s first innings was powered by a magnificent 140-run effort from Steve Smith. The veteran batter displayed his class once again, anchoring the innings with precise footwork and well-timed strokes. Contributions from Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Sam Konstas (60) provided solid support, pushing the hosts to an imposing total of 474.

India’s reply began shakily, losing their top order early to some disciplined bowling from Australian bowlers. With the team reeling under pressure, it seemed Australia would enforce the follow-on. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy (105*) stepped up with a counterattacking innings that turned the tide. The young batter, displayed incredible composure and a wide array of strokes to notch up his maiden century. Reddy found an able partner in Washington Sundar, whose calm and assured half-century (50) further frustrated the Australian bowlers. The duo played a vital role in bringing India closer to the follow-on mark.

Meanwhile, weather interrupted the proceedings, with rain forcing an early close to the proceedings. At stumps, India were precariously placed at 358-9.
