Ben Duckett, Joe Root help England pull off crushing win over India

England pulled off a crushing victory over India in the first Test of the five-match series on Tuesday at Headingley, winning by five wickets in an incredibly thrilling final-day finish. The hosts chased down a challenging target of 371 with remarkable consistency. Most importantly, a sizzling 149-run knock from opener Ben Duckett and a series of key contributions throughout the batting order played a major role in England’s thunderous win.
England showed intent from the outset. Duckett, anchoring the innings with utmost care, paced the chase masterfully. His aggressive innings kept the pressure on Indian bowlers. Majorly, Duckett's 149 was the cornerstone of England’s successful pursuit of the daunting target.
Notably, Joe Root, who brought his typical elegance to the crease, made a valuable contribution. Root struck a magnificent 53*, steadying the middle order and ensuring momentum remained in England’s favour. Root was well assisted by Jamie Smith, who blazed a fluent 44* off 55 balls.
Earlier, India, who began the match strongly after being asked to bat, had posted an imposing 471 in their first innings, thanks to centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. England responded with grit and determination, matching them almost blow for blow, ending their first innings on 465. In their second innings, India managed 364, leaving England with a fourth-innings target of 371.
