Sanju Samson requests release from Rajasthan Royals ahead IPL 2026: Reports

In an eye-catching development, Rajasthan Royals’ captain and star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has informed the franchise of his desire to be released ahead of the upcoming IPL auction. According to ESPNcricnfo, Samson informed the franchise immediately after the IPL 2025 concluded. Despite Samson’s request, RR have not made any definitive decision on the matter. According to the report, the possibility of persuading him to stay with the franchise still remains on the table. RR held their review meetings in June 2025.
But Manoj Badale, the franchise’s lead owner, provided no comment when questioned about the development. He will make the final decision in consultation with Rahul Dravid, the head coach of RR. If RR decide to release Samson, then he could either be traded to another franchise or put up for auction. According to the IPL contract, the franchise has the last say in such scenarios.
Samson has been part of the Rajasthan Royals since 2013. He was retained for Rs 18 crore by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Meanwhile, at IPL 2025, Samson was only seen in action in nine games as he was battling an injury. In his absence, Riyan Parag stepped up to lead the side. Overall, Samson has captained RR in 67 IPL matches.
