Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage has reportedly left for Colombo to be with his family following the demise of his father. In a deeply emotional and heart-wrenching turn of events, Dunith Wellalage received the tragic news of his father’s passing just after playing a Group B match against Afghanistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. His father passed away on Thursday night, the same day Wellalage was on the field in the group-stage match of the tournament against Afghanistan.

It remains unclear whether Wellalage will return to join the Sri Lankan squad for the remainder of the tournament. The cricket community has rallied around the young all-rounder during this challenging time, showing their support.

Notably, Thursday's Asia Cup match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan was Wellalage's fifth T20I and his first in the ongoing tournament. However, he endured a horrible day against Afghanistan, conceding 49 runs in four overs. He was also hit for 32 runs in the final over when Mohammad Nabi smashed him for five sixes. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by six wickets to progress into the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025.
