Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has been given the green signal to join Australia's squad for the first Test, but in a disappointing development, Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the first Test due to a "moderate grade" injury. The pacer picked up the injury while representing New South Wales in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season, forcing him to withdraw from the upcoming clash against England beginning November 21. Cricket Australia confirmed Abbott's diagnosis following scans that revealed a moderate strain. Hazlewood, who also underwent scans, was cleared to be available for the Ashes opener in Perth.

"Josh Hazlewood will join the Australian squad as planned in Perth ahead of the first NRMA Insurance Ashes Test," Cricket Australia said in a statement.

"Hazlewood left the field late in Victoria’s innings at the SCG today reporting tightness in his right hamstring. He underwent precautionary scans which have cleared him of muscle strain. He will train as planned in the lead up to the first Test in Perth.

"Sean Abbott also left the field having reported left hamstring soreness. Scans confirmed a moderate grade hamstring injury. He will not be available for selection for the first Test match in Perth and his return to play plan will be developed over the coming weeks."

Abbott's injury could pave the way for Brendan Doggett to make his Test debut. Meanwhile, Pat Cummins, who is set to miss the first Test, is continuing his rehabilitation to attain full fitness ahead of the second Test.
