"I think his position": Kumble weighs in on Washington Sundar's batting position

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar’s batting position in the ongoing two-match Test series against South Africa has become one of the most discussed topics. His batting position has not been constant, being shifted regularly by the management. In the first Test at Eden Gardens, Sundar was surprisingly promoted to number 3, while Sai Sudharsan was left on the bench. But in the second Test in Guwahati, Sundar was dropped down to number 8, making way for Sudharsan. This continuous shift in his batting has drawn widespread criticism. However, former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble felt that Sundar batted at the right spot in India's first innings in Guwahati.

"I know, he (Sundar) sort of was pushed the top of the order, the last game, but I think his position, for me at least, is correct in terms of number seven, number eight, is where I think he should be batting, because this is where he can hurt the opposition. And the top order needs to settle down," Kumble said on JioHotstar as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Notably, Washington Sundar played a big innings amid India's stunning collapse, slamming a noteworthy knock of 48 off 92 deliveries. His innings took India past 200, giving the side a ray of hope.

"But I thought he showed a lot of courage to just be there, hang around, and put together a really good partnership with Kuldeep Yadav. Otherwise, this, I'm sure, then Temba Bavuma wouldn't have had to go back to check whether he needed to, again, enforce follow-on. I am sure that if Kuldeep had got out early, I think India would have been batting here in the second innings. So yeah, it's a bit disappointing," Kumble said.
