The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has taken a massive step by approving a new policy that limits their players’ participation in overseas leagues. Under the decision, Afghan cricketers will be allowed to feature in only three international franchise leagues per year, in addition to competing in the board’s own upcoming five-team franchise-based T20 tournament.

"To protect player fitness and mental well-being, the board approved a new policy regarding foreign leagues. Players will now be permitted to participate in the Afghanistan Premier League (APL), plus only three other international leagues per year. This measure aims to manage workload and ensure peak performance for national duties," the ACB said in a statement.

The decision was taken during the ACB’s annual general meeting, which was recently held in Kabul. The board cited workload management and readiness of national players for Afghanistan’s own competitions and international commitments as the reasons behind the decision. It is worth noting that ACB is set to launch a new franchise-based T20 league, scheduled to begin around October 2026. The tournament will feature five teams.
