New Zealand have been handed a massive blow ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, with star spinner Eden Carson officially ruled out of next year’s tournament as she undergoes surgery on her right elbow. Carson, who was one of the key reasons behind New Zealand's historic T20 World Cup victory in Dubai last year, has been sidelined after medical advice confirmed she required immediate surgery to address a long-standing elbow issue. The timing of the operation means that she will not recover in time for the 2026 tournament, scheduled to take place in England from June 12.

We’re all really gutted for Eden. The team has a big six months ahead and I know how difficult it was for her to make the decision to go through with the surgery now, but I fully support it," West Indies head coach Ben Sawyer said.

“It'll obviously be a huge loss for the team not having Eden available, especially for the T20 World Cup where she played a big role for us last year."

“At just 24-years-old she’s still got a long career ahead so it’s important we look forward and prioritise getting her back on the park and fully fit.”

During New Zealand's campaign in Dubai last year, the young spinner collected nine wickets at an impressive average of 16.33.
