New Zealand's Suzie Bates out of action for three months following injury

New Zealand have been dealt a crushing setback ahead of their home summer, with senior all-rounder Suzie Bates ruled out of the upcoming series against Zimbabwe scheduled for February–March 2026. The experienced campaigner is recovering from a quadriceps injury and will be sidelined for almost three months, keeping her out of action for the remainder of the season.

Bates sustained the injury last month while fielding for Otago in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, New Zealand’s premier women’s domestic one-day competition. Medical assessments and follow-up scans later confirmed the seriousness of the tear, prompting a rehabilitation plan that requires an extended period away from the game.

"I'm gutted to be missing out this summer, I was really looking forward to another season with the [Otago] Sparks, especially the Super Smash. I'm determined to get back on the field with the White Ferns in March, so that'll be my focus for now,” Bates said in a NZC statement.

Undoubtedly, the absence of Bates is a significant blow for New Zealand, given her vast experience. Having played 178 ODIs and 177 T20Is, she has amassed 5936 and 4716 runs, respectively.
