Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of Mumbai for the remainder of their league campaign in the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The decision comes after all-rounder Shardul Thakur was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, forcing a late change ahead of two crucial fixtures. Placed in Group C, Mumbai will play Himachal Pradesh on January 6 before wrapping up their league phase against Punjab on January 8. Both matches will be held in Jaipur.

"Shreyas Iyer will take over the leadership responsibilities in place of Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury and is currently unavailable for selection," Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Dr Umesh Khanvilkar said.

Iyer is set to return to competitive cricket after remaining on the sidelines for three months due to a spleen laceration. Iyer suffered the injury during India's tour of Australia in late October 2025. Meanwhile, he has also been included in India's ODI squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.
