Australia’s T20 World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in Kandy, where opener Pathum Nissanka delivered a breathtaking unbeaten century to steer the co-hosts home with ease. Australia were sent in to bat and appeared in control for much of their innings. Captain Mitchell Marsh, returning to lead the side, and Travis Head forged a blistering 104-run opening partnership.

The pair attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers from the outset. However, the innings unravelled dramatically. After the strong foundation laid by Marsh and Head, the middle and lower order faltered under pressure. In a massive collapse, Australia lost their final six wickets for just 21 runs, finally bowled out for 181. The Australians had reshuffled their playing XI, making three changes for the must-win encounter.

Notably, Steve Smith, who had been added to the squad before the match, had been left out. Sri Lanka, chasing the target, reached 182 for two with 12 balls to spare after Pathum Nissanka smashed an unbeaten 100 from 52 balls. Kusal Mendis provided valuable support with an incredible 51 off 38 balls. Speaking after the match, Marsh expressed disappointment.

"It's a pretty shattered group. Disappointing to lose that," Marsh said at the press conference.

For Australia to qualify, Zimbabwe must lose to both Ireland and Sri Lanka. Marsh admitted that Australia’s future in the tournament is no longer in their own hands.

"I dare say we'll all be watching the match tomorrow (ZIM vs IRE). Whether it's all together or not we'll wait and see. What do you say? The luck of the Irish?," Marsh said.

"Right now, it's out of our control, so we'll wait and see," Marsh stated.

Marsh underlined the lack of exclusion from Australia that led to their defeat.

"It was probably execution tonight. That full-strength batting line-up has some of the best players of spin in Australia. I thought Sri Lanka pulled it back beautifully, and we ended up a few short after the start we got. We probably needed those runs going into the second innings. I had great belief we would get the job done, but we were outplayed," he said.

"I guess we'll never know what would have happened if we made 220, but as I said earlier, we had a good platform, and we just couldn't execute at the back end. I know that in these conditions partnerships are incredibly important. Outside the opening partnership, we just weren't able to find another one to get the innings going again," Marsh added.
