Bates and Devine return as New Zealand gear up for South Africa T20I series

New Zealand have announced their squad for the upcoming five-match Women’s T20I series against South Africa, with experienced campaigners Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine returning to the squad after injury layoffs. The series, which will be essential in New Zealand’s preparations for the major women’s T20 tournament scheduled to take place in England later this year, begins on March 15 at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
Bates, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished batters, has recovered from a quad tear that kept her out of recent matches. Also back in the squad are Georgia Plimmer, who had been sidelined with a shoulder injury, and Flora Devonshire, who has successfully completed rehabilitation following a broken finger.
Notably, Bree Illing and Polly Inglis will be available for the opening two matches. Later, they will make way for Lea Tahuhu and Devonshire, who will play the remaining three games.
“We’re really excited to welcome back Suzie and Sophie for this next block of games. Their quality on the field speaks for itself, but what they bring culturally is really important for us as a team. I’m looking forward to having them mix in with some of the newer members of the squad," Head coach Ben Sawyer said.
“Flora had a couple of back-to-back injuries that have kept her out of the squad for the last little while, which is never nice as a player. It’s really pleasing to be able to have her back in the group, fit and firing for when we need her," he said.
New Zealand T20I squad: Amelia Kerr (c), Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Flora Devonshire (last three T20Is only), Isabella Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing (first two T20Is only), Polly Inglis (first two T20Is only), Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Georgia Plimmer, Izzy Sharp, Lea Tahuhu (last three T20Is only)
