"I would have done things differently": Salman Agha on contentious run-out

The second ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday turned into a major talking point after a controversial run-out involving Pakistan batter Salman Ali Agha. The incident, which occurred during the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings, triggered a debate over the spirit of cricket. The contentious episode unfolded when Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan played a straight drive back towards Bangladesh captain and bowler Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The ball rolled near the non-striker’s end, where Agha, who was backing up outside his crease, moved toward it.

As Agha bent down to pick up the ball, intending to hand it back to the bowler, Miraz quickly grabbed the ball and underarmed a throw to the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Because Agha was still outside his crease and the ball had not been declared dead, the Bangladesh players appealed for a run-out. The decision was referred to the third umpire, who ruled Agha out. Meanwhile, Agha, who scored 64 from 62 balls, reacted angrily after the decision, throwing his helmet and gloves in anger. Speaking after the match, Agha said that the dismissal was within the rules but suggested that the situation could have been handled differently

"I mean, I'm sure everyone has seen it. It was just heat-of-the-moment stuff. If you ask me what I would have done, I would have done things differently. But whatever happened after that was the heat of the moment," Agha said at the press conference.

"It is within the law, and I'm someone who always wants to follow the law. But sometimes when it comes to sportsman spirit, I think sportsman spirit has to be up there no matter what the situation. But what he has done is in the law. If he thinks it is right, then it is right. But from my perspective, I would have done things differently. I would have gone for sportsman spirit," he said.

Agha went on to explain what transpired during his dismissal.

"Actually, the ball hit on my pad and then my bat. So I thought he can't get me run-out now, because the ball already hit on my pad and my bat. I was just trying to give him the ball back. I was not looking for the run or anything like that," he said.
