The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has received the approval from the Government of Karnataka to host matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The decision brings much-needed clarity regarding the venue’s status for the upcoming season. Now, following the clearance, the stadium will host the opening match of the IPL season on March 28, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in a star-studded showdown.

"We are pleased to inform that a meeting was held earlier today at Vidhana Soudha under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Home Minister of Karnataka, Dr. G. Parameshwar, with the Expert Committee and representatives of KSCA, RCB and DNA. During the meeting, the Expert Committee presented its report outlining the preparedness and compliance measures undertaken at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium," the KSCA stated in a media release.

"Based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee and after reviewing the arrangements in detail, the Home Minister has formally accorded approval for the conduct of the upcoming IPL matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru," the release added.

Last week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the IPL 2026 schedule for the first 20 matches of the tournament, with Bengaluru being listed among the host cities, but the board included an important condition, stating that matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium would proceed only if an expert committee approved the venue’s readiness and safety measures.

This caution was adopted due to the lingering concerns surrounding the stadium after a tragic incident in 2025. Last year, during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a stampede outside the stadium claimed the lives of 11 people, which raised serious questions about crowd management. Following the tragedy, the Chinnaswamy Stadium did not host any competitive cricket matches for months. However, the nod from the government comes as a huge relief for the fans. Meanwhile, the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League will begin on March 28.
