World Cup teaches you how important mental strength is: Abhishek Sharma

India opener Abhishek Sharma has reflected on what he describes as one of the toughest phases of his international career, drawing important lessons from a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. Sharma entered the tournament with immense expectations; however, the tournament turned into a big test of his mental strength. He headed into the World Cup on the back of a splendid run-scoring streak and was expected to play a defining role for India at the top of the order.

But just as the tournament began, Abhishek was forced to miss India’s group-stage clash against Namibia due to illness. When he returned to the playing XI, things did not improve as he registered three consecutive ducks. The sudden dip in form came as a shock, impacting his performance and also challenging his confidence.

"Playing a World Cup teaches you quickly how important mental strength and process are," Abhishek told Hindustan Times.

"The biggest learning for me was staying balanced, not getting too high after a good innings and not too low after failures," he said.

Abhishek Sharma also spoke about the support he received from captain Suryakumar Yadav and his long-time mentor Yuvraj Singh during this difficult period.

"Surya bhai was amazing throughout. Even after the ducks, his message was very clear: 'Play your natural game and don’t worry about the result.' That kind of backing from your captain makes a huge difference. When a leader shows that much trust, it allows you to go out there and express yourself without fear," Abhishek said.

"I spoke to Yuvi paaji regularly. He’s always been someone I can go to for honest advice. His message was simple: 'Don’t change who you are as a player.' He told me that aggressive players will have phases like this, but if you keep backing your strengths, runs will come," he added.

Sharma, who will now be seen in the IPL 2026 representing Sunrisers Hyderabad, admitted that the T20 World Cup 2026 was a turning point in his career, and this experience will help him in the future.

"Experiences like this make you stronger as a player. When you go through highs and lows in such a big tournament, you learn a lot about yourself. Hopefully, it will make me more resilient and mature in how I approach the game. My goal is to take these lessons forward and keep growing as a cricketer," he said.
