As Chennai Super Kings gear up to face Punjab Kings in the seventh match of the IPL 2026 on Friday in Chennai, the side is under enormous pressure to make their comeback after facing a defeat in their opening match. The transition phase for Chennai Super Kings has been incredibly challenging. For over a decade, the franchise’s identity has revolved around the calming presence of MS Dhoni, and now, with the icon not being part of the setup, a new chapter has begun for CSK under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad, meanwhile, has made his intentions clear, underlining patience in his approach. He has made it clear that he isn’t interested in stamping his personality forcefully onto the squad. Rather, he has emphasised developing a supportive environment.

"Not forcing it [captaincy], to be honest. But, we didn't have the best of squads last year. And when I say that, you know, no disrespect to any players. But, I think, the combination didn't just click the way we wanted," Gaikwad said at the pre-match press conference.

"Looking at this team now, it is a very young team. The excitement is there, but at the same time, there's a lot of difference between experienced players and inexperienced players. So, you have to allow them to make mistakes. You have to allow them to express themselves. You have to make sure that they are in a good headspace," he said.

CSK's IPL 2026 campaign began on a dull note with the men in yellow struggling to adapt to the conditions in Guwahati. Their big-hitters Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Matt Short didn't find the rhythm to get going, failing to perform. However, they are now back in familiar conditions, scheduled to play their first home game of the season.

"Regarding pitches, I feel a lot depends here on the weather. Whatever World Cup games happened, they happened in the month of February. So, not much of dew or forecast about rain or cloudy weather as well. So, I think with the best weather and best conditions… the Chennai wicket usually plays really well,” Gaikwad said.
