"People will praise you and criticise you": Sehwag slams Ajinkya Rahane

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has shared his views on the importance of handling criticism in modern cricket, urging players to respond with composure. His remarks come in the wake of recent comments made by Ajinkya Rahane, who was visibly frustrated when questioned about his strike rate. Rahane was asked about his strike rate following a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Responding to the query, Rahane pointed out that he has consistently been among the leading run-scorers in recent seasons. According to Sehwag, scrutiny is an unavoidable part of a professional cricketer’s life, and players should address such queries calmly.

"I don't think players should say all of this. I know he is the captain, and he was asked why Cameron Green is not bowling, he did not have a straight answer for that, so he said to ask Cricket Australia. I can understand that. But if someone is questioning my strike rate or batting style, people will praise you and criticise you, but you have to be neutral with both," the former opener said on Cricbuzz.

"Why is there a need to engage in such fights? They seem that they are answering the critics, but even Bachchan saab (Amitabh Bachchan) never answered his critics. There could not be a bigger example than Tendulkar, one newspaper had even written 'Endulkar'. Did he issue a response for that? If you respond, then it is a win for the critics, not for you," he added.

Rahane had also earlier given a sharp reply when asked about the bowling options of Cameron Green after a loss to the Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the season. His response further garnered attention.

“My strike rate… I have the best strike rate so far, from 2023. People who are talking are probably not watching the game or have a certain agenda against me. They don’t like me playing," Rahane had said.
