"They are clueless": Ex-England batter highlights CSK's weakness

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan did not hold back in his assessment of Chennai Super Kings following their one-sided defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 on Sunday. The five-time champions were thoroughly outclassed, suffering a 43-run loss in a match that exposed several weaknesses in their current setup.
RCB’s dominance was built on standout performances from Tim David and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who played pivotal roles in both innings.
For CSK, the defeat was their third consecutive loss that has left them languishing at the bottom of the points table. Vaughan criticised the team’s overall approach, suggesting that they have lacked intensity and aggression throughout the season. According to him, CSK’s performances have appeared flat, with little of the energy that once made them one of the most feared teams in the league. Vaughan noted that the team seems to be missing the element of unpredictability, which has made it easier for opposition batters to settle in and dominate.
"Teams struggling like CSK are all running around in the field. They are clueless about where to be. The captain is waving his arms all the time. They've got some players that aren't fiery. Their bowling attack will travel because it lacks mystery," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
"When they've been winning this tournament, they've had the greatest captain that's ever played T20 cricket (Dhoni) behind the stumps. He waved his paddles around and then went in at No.6 or 7 and won games of cricket. Their bowling is the real concern, and hence the struggles of the top three," he said.
The team’s struggles have also been linked to significant changes ahead of the season. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja moved to Rajasthan Royals, while Sanju Samson headed in the opposite direction. These shifts appear to have disrupted the balance CSK traditionally relied upon.
