"I don’t think he needs a formal title...": Indian coach on Pant being removed as vice-captain

Indian assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has stressed that Rishabh Pant's success in the upcoming Test series against Afghanistan will depend on his ability to assess match situations and adjust his approach accordingly. India are set to face Afghanistan in a one-off Test, beginning on Saturday in Mohali.

Ten Doeschate, speaking on Pant, said that the left-hand batter has to show game awareness and responsible decision-making at the crease. He also addressed questions regarding Pant's removal as India's Test vice-captain, making it clear that Pant has accepted the decision amicably and he totally remains committed to the team's objective.

“I don’t think he needs a formal title to be a leader in an elite setup like this, and I think Rishabh understands that. I think he’s committed to playing a good role model and senior player," Ryan Ten Doeschate said at the press conference.

"With Rishabh’s brilliance, we don’t want to take away all the stuff that he does, you know. Occasionally, I think if he can adjust his game to play the situations slightly more, I think that’s something you’ll see him work on. But he’s been in great spirits again. He's always been one of those guys who is happy and cheerful and sort of drives the spirit in the team. No concerns about Rishabh, and I can't wait to see him bat again," he added.

Meanwhile, Pant enters the Afghanistan series looking to bounce back from a disappointing Test series against South Africa, where the dynamic batter struggled to find consistency during the series, managing to get only 49 runs across his appearances.
