BAN vs AUS, 1st ODI: Depleted Australia in hunt for rhythm as they meet Bangladesh

After copping a 2-1 series defeat against Pakistan in a three-match ODI series, Australia are shifting their focus to a six-match white-ball series against Bangladesh. The visitors will face Bangladesh in three ODIs and three T20Is in what is considered to be Australia's most hectic schedule. The assignment is set to begin with the ODIs, and the first match is scheduled to be held at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka on Tuesday. As was seen during the Pakistan ODIs, Australia will once again miss stars Mitchell Marsh (ankle) and Travis Head (personal leave), who both have been ruled out of ODIs, with Matt Short and Oliver Peake retained from the Pakistan series.

The trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood continues to miss out due to workload management. Now, heading into this series, Australia would look to leave the past defeat behind and make a strong comeback against Bangladesh. There will be huge responsibility on experienced players like Josh Inglis, Matthew Short, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa to ramp up their attack in order to help the side.

On the other hand, Bangladesh have been brilliantly dominant at home. They have not suffered an ODI series defeat at home since 2024, having claimed victories over big teams like West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand. Bangladesh will bank on their familiar faces, Litton Das, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, and Tanzid Hasan, who have been in exceptionally beautiful form, to handle the bulk of scoring. Bowlers like Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, and Nahid Rana have also been in hot form, especially at home, and will be explosively threatening.

Notably, Bangladesh have brought back all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain, who returns to the ODI squad after an almost four-year gap, having last featured in an ODI in August 2022. Wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan also makes his return to the side, having sat out Bangladesh's 2-1 series win against New Zealand recently.

Head-to-head

Australia likely XI: Alex Carey (wk), Matt Short, Josh Inglis (c&wk), Cooper Connolly/Todd Murphy, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne, Oliver Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Xavier Bartlett
