"I feel as a dominating team...": Abhishek Sharma on India's defeat vs Ireland

Ireland completely obliterated India, clinching a 34-run win in the opening T20I in Belfast on Friday. The historic win was Ireland's maiden victory over the defending champions in any format. Asked to bat, Ireland were in trouble early on, struggling at 36/3. However, captain Lorcan Tucker steadied the innings with a splendid half-century. A valuable contribution from Gareth Delany, scoring 49 off 32 balls, to take the side to a competitive total of 182/9 in 20 overs. Speaking on India's defeat, opener Abhishek Sharma felt that the team failed to adapt to the conditions.
"It's just how quickly we adapt to the conditions that really matters as a team, because when you are playing back-to-back games, as a group you have to step forward and get used to the conditions. Whenever you get practice sessions or probably get used to, I feel as a dominating team, you have to adapt really quick and that's what we were trying today, but unfortunately it didn't happen," Sharma said at the press conference after the match.
Abhishek also talked about young star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is in the squad but was left out of the playing XI. Vaibhav received his maiden India call-up after shining in the IPL 2026.
"As a team, it is our responsibility to make him comfortable so that he doesn't feel he is new in the team. Obviously, he is very curious to play all the time. He is just learning right now. He also asks questions, so I feel he has that in himself where he wants to learn a lot of things. Obviously, it is a dream for him," he said.
The second and final T20I will be held on Sunday in Belfast. The second match is a must-win game for India in order to level the series.
