"I don't want it to be my last World Cup": England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt on her future

Australia overcame England by seven wickets in the final of the Women's T20I World Cup on Sunday at Lord's to clinch their seventh women's T20 World Cup crown. Asked to bat, England's star-studded batting unit failed to score freely against Australia's disciplined bowling attack led by Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton, Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland, who returned with one wicket each to restrict England to 150/4 in 20 overs.

After England's dramatic top-order collapse, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Freya Kemp rescued the side with their skilful knocks of 58 and 44, respectively, to take the side to a respectable total. Still, things ended in great disappointment for England, who could not overcome their oldest rivals. After the defeat, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who also brought her son Theo on the ground shortly after the defeat, spoke about her future but remained quite reticent.

"I probably won't play in a home World Cup again, so having the opportunity to bring Theo out was really special," an emotional Sciver-Brunt said at the press conference.

"And I'm going to cry...I can't really tell you how special it is. I haven't thought about that," Sciver-Brunt said.

"I don't want it to be my last World Cup. I don't even know when the next one is. I'm living day by day at the moment."

"I haven't even put some thought into that at all. But yeah, I guess obviously family is everything, and the support that we get from our families, our team, our supporters, it all just means so much. I guess that's why the emotions are high."

Sciver-Brunt made a stunning return from a calf injury, playing a resounding role in times of need. She was hugely instrumental in England's win over South Africa in semi-final 2 with a gutsy 75-run knock.

“Trying to nurse an injury during a World Cup hasn’t been easy. I’ve always wanted to try and remain positive around the group and not let on too much how I’m feeling. Missing those games were pretty tough. I just tried to do everything I could do to not be too disruptive coming back."

“I probably surprised myself a bit coming into back in that semi-final and being able to redo what I did. I’m really proud of what I was able to do," she said.
