ICC reveals major changes in format ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
The 2027 ODI World Cup, set to be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia, will see the introduction of a Super Series round before the Group Stage match. With the arrival of this rule, two teams will be eliminated from the original 14, with the remaining 12 teams being divided into two groups of six.
The global event will also see the introduction of the Super Seven stage, where the top three teams from each group and the next best-ranked side will qualify. Then the top four teams from the Super 7 will advance to the semifinals before the final. The decisions were taken at the ICC Board's annual meeting in Edinburgh.
In the Super Seven, all seven teams will compete in a single round-robin. Then, the top-four teams will make it to the semi-finals; there, the first-placed team will face the fourth-placed side and the second will go against the third. Later, the winning teams will fight it out in the final.
