Rob Key keeps door open for Stokes’s potential Ashes return
England Men's managing director Rob Key has said that the possibility of Ben Stokes returning to international cricket for next year's Ashes series cannot be ruled out. Last month, Stokes made a shock announcement during England's third Test against New Zealand, revealing his decision to retire from international cricket.
Explaining the reason behind his decision, Stokes had said that years of leading the Test side had taken a mental toll. Following his retirement, speculation started swirling over whether the all-rounder could be persuaded to return, especially with an Ashes series on the horizon. However, Stokes quickly dismissed those suggestions.
Recently, Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald also added fuel to the ongoing discussions by saying that an Ashes return would be the perfect ending to Stokes' tremendous career. He described the idea as a cricketing fairytale, imagining Stokes returning for one final battle against Australia's greatest rivals.
“It would be a brilliant story if he does [come back]. He hasn’t [indicated a change in his decision], but I wouldn’t be surprised. Anything is possible with Ben,” Key said as quoted by Sky Sports.
Key also touched upon Stokes’ retirement, saying that the manner and timing of the announcement did not spoil the relationship between the player and the England management. Notably, Ben Stokes has represented England in 122 Test matches, scoring 7,273 runs, including 14 centuries and 37 half-centuries.
“No, not at all. Not as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
