Ireland to play 2027 World Cup Qualifier after 1st ODI against Afghanistan gets abandoned
Ireland have encountered an unexpected roadblock in their automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup after persistent rain forced the opening ODI against Afghanistan in Bready to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. The washout means that Ireland will have to take the longer qualification route to book their ticket in the ODI World Cup.
However, ahead of the five-match ODI series, Ireland had a mammoth task at hand because they are currently ranked 12th in the ICC men's ODI standings, and they needed a 5-0 series sweep over Afghanistan to make gains in their ranking. Notably, Ireland missed out on the 2023 ODI World Cup after being eliminated during the Super Six stage of the previous qualification tournament. Now, Ireland will take part in the 10-team ICC World Cup Qualifier, where the battle for places in the 2027 World Cup will be hugely competitive. The winner of the Qualifier will earn direct entry into the main tournament, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will still have another opportunity. Those three sides will advance to the newly introduced Super Series, the opening stage of the World Cup, where only the top-performing team will secure the final place in the main 12-team competition. The 10-team Qualifier will feature the two lowest-ranked full member nations in the ODI, top four teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and four additional teams progressing from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
