Fresh trouble for West Indies as they miss direct World Cup qualification
There is trouble brewing for West Indies, who have once again missed out on an automatic qualification spot for the ODI World Cup 2027. This setback would force them to go through the qualifier if they are to earn a place at the 2027 World Cup. As of now, the qualification picture for the tournament is pretty clear. As per rules, top eight teams in the ICC ODI standings as of September 30, 2026, will have direct qualification, with South Africa and Zimbabwe already guaranteed places due to being the hosts.
Afghanistan have secured their automatic qualification sides following their superb victory over Ireland in Belfast. Now, they have joined a group that includes defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh, alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Back in 2023, West Indies were in the same position, as they were unable to secure direct qualification and subsequently played the Qualifier, where their campaign ended during the Super Six stage, finishing fifth.
Now, to make it to the ODI World Cup, West Indies will have to play 2027 Qualifier, which is scheduled to take place in February next year. Qualifiers is a 10-team tournament, featuring West Indies and Ireland, the two bottom-ranked non-host Full Members in the ODI rankings. They will be joined by four top-placed teams from World Cup League 2 and four teams from the Qualifier Playoffs tournament. In this, top four teams will gain direct entry in the World Cup, while the teams finishing in second, third and fourth place will play the Super Series, from where only one team will qualify.
