“Technology saved me”: Steve Smith
Australian batting star Steve Smith was given a major reprieve during the tense opening session of the first Test against Bangladesh after a delivery from Ebadot Hossain appeared to take the edge of his bat. The dramatic incident occurred in the 21st over, when Smith pushed at a delivery and the ball was clearly collected by the wicketkeeper.
Bangladesh started celebrating thinking they had got the wicket of Smith. However, umpire Kumar Dharmasena was unmoved and signalled that Smith was not out. Not convinced, Bangladesh opted to review the decision.
Meanwhile, Smith's reaction created even more drama because he appeared to begin walking off the field, seemingly convinced that he had made contact with the ball. However, the replay gave a surprise because there was no spike when ball went past the bat. Later Smith admitted he had also believed that he had nicked the delivery.
“I think so. Yeah. I was lucky? Yeah, it seems that way. You got to take it sometimes,” Smith said at the press conference.
When asked whether he trusted the technology, Smith said it certainly gave him a let-off.
“Normally, it’s pretty good. Yeah, maybe I didn’t nick it. I don’t know, but I certainly felt something. If I had been given out, I was going to walk off. But yeah, technology saved me today, I guess,” he said.
