Ex-Indian spinner backs Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team has been quite shaky because since taking charge, Gambhir has found himself under the spotlight. Amid the team’s performances in red-ball format going down, there has been mounting criticism against Gambhir. The team also failed to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship final, which also contributed to the pressure surrounding Gambhir’s position.
Majorly, India’s red-ball campaign has been a big concern following the home-series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa. However, former India spinner Amit Mishra believes Gambhir should not be judged too quickly and be given some more time. Having shared the dressing room with Gambhir during his playing days, Mishra is very much aware of the determination of Gambhir.
“It is tough for the coach. I think players need to take more responsibility. One coach for all formats has been the norm for years. You have to give time to any coach," Mishra said while speaking to The Times of India.
“In Tests, we have new players with less experience. It takes time for coaches and players to develop.”
Mishra pointed out that Rahul Dravid, who preceded Gambhir as India’s head coach, also needed time before his tenure began producing successful results.
“It took 1-1.5 years for Rahul Dravid to establish himself. Then performance improved. Players need to take responsibility, understand the wicket’s behaviour. You are selected from 140-145 crore people; you have to adapt according to the wicket and situation. That is why you are playing at the top. I don’t think any blame should be given to the coach," Mishra said.
