David Warner fined $1,500 for mid-range drink driving offence

Former Australian cricketer David Warner has been sentenced and fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to a mid-range drink-driving offence in Sydney. The incredibly talented batter was pulled over by police during the Easter long weekend after he stopped his vehicle over before reaching a random breath-testing checkpoint in Maroubra, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Police reported that Warner returned a positive roadside breath test, while a subsequent test recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.104, which was more than twice the legal limit.
"I accept Mr Warner is unlikely to reoffend," Judge Clare Farnan told the court as per Australian media outlets.
"(But) regrettably, drink-driving is still a significant factor in many crashes in NSW."
Warner’s legal representative formally entered a guilty plea in July, with the matter later heard at Waverley Local Court.
Appearing on Warner’s behalf on Tuesday, barrister Awais Ahmad admitted the seriousness of the former international cricketer’s decision to drive after attending a social gathering. Ahmad described the decision as the product of impaired and impulsive judgment, calling it a “frankly foolish” choice.
