Joe Root made a thumping return as England’s permanent Test captain as his side decimated Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first at Headingley on Friday. England kept themselves on top from the opening day, giving Pakistan no chance of making their comeback. The most alarming was Pakistan’s batting struggle because problems began immediately after they were put to bat, with their batting line-up stuttering for 171 in 48.1 overs.

England pacers were incredibly impressive, with Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson combining to claim five wickets between them. In their batting England took complete command, posting 409 and taking a big lead to put Pakistan under huge pressure. England’s batting assault was led by Jordan Cox, Joe Root and Harry Brook, firing 73, 66 and 91 respectively.

Meanwhile, the situation became more disturbing for Pakistan on the third day after they were dismissed for 135. Their innings lasted for 37.3 overs, and England’s bowlers repeatedly delivered blows to rip through Pakistan's batting order. Jofra Archer, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue were the main heroes in the second innings, taking three wickets each to launch England to victory.
