New Zealand star Mark Chapman has opted to move from a full-time New Zealand Cricket (NZC) contract to a casual playing agreement. The change comes after Chapman's decision to take up an opportunity in the Big Bash League (BBL). It will also give him the flexibility to participate in the BBL while remaining eligible for selection for the home side.

Chapman will, though, remain with the Black Caps for their upcoming white-ball assignment against India in November. Chapman joins New Zealand players like Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert, who have also opted for casual contracts for 2026/27 season.

"I’m thankful to New Zealand Cricket for their support now and throughout my career. The upcoming India series is one all us players are really excited for, and I’m committed wholeheartedly to performing in that series,” Chapman said.

Chapman’s decision paves the way for Northern Districts fast bowler Matt Fisher to earn a central contract, completing the 20-player list for the 2026-27 season.

“With Matt Fisher coming onto the central contract list, it creates a space at Northern Districts to bring another athlete onto their contract list to continue their development. Matt has impressed with the opportunities he’s had for the BLACKCAPS, and his pace is definitely something we want to nurture," New Zealand Cricket Chief High Performance Officer Daryl Gibson said.
