Smriti Mandhana creates history, becomes first woman to notch up 11,000 International runs
India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana added another glittering record to her already decorated career on Tuesday, becoming the first woman cricketer to reach 11,000 runs in international cricket. Mandhana accomplished the record during India’s Asian Games gold-medal clash against Sri Lanka at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. During her knock, she slammed 79 off 45 balls, firing five fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 175.56.
Mandhana headed into the final only 13 runs short of the milestone. She had accumulated 10,987 international runs across Tests, ODIs and T20Is before the match. Ahead of the Asian Games final, Mandhana’s international tally across all three formats had 788 runs in Tests, 5,411 in ODIs and 4,788 in T20Is before.
Earlier this month, Mandhana surpassed former India captain Mithali Raj's tally of 10,868 international runs during the Women's Asia Cup, becoming the highest run-scorer across the three formats in women's cricket. Moreover, in the Asian Games semifinal against Bangladesh, she scored 37 off 19, going past New Zealand great Suzie Bates to become the leading run-scorer in women's T20I cricket. At that stage, Mandhana had 4,788 T20I runs.
