Women's Asian Games, Final: India women outplay Sri Lanka to secure gold medal
India women have clinched a gold medal after delivering a sensational all-round performance in the Women’s Asian Games final, in which they thrashed Sri Lanka by a massive 147 runs at Korogi Sports Park on Tuesday. India, after deciding to bat, enjoyed a rollicking start following a superb performance from their openers.
Smriti Mandhana starred with a brilliant 79 off 45 deliveries. Her innings featured five boundaries and seven towering sixes. Richa Ghosh also finished unbeaten on 49 off only 22 balls to keep India on top. Richa’s aggressive cameo included six fours and three sixes, propelling India to a formidable total of 216/3.
In their chase, Sri Lanka encountered an utter failure as their batters kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Skipper Chamari Athapathu was the highest scorer, bringing up 29 runs in a hard-fought knock. Meanwhile, Indian bowlers remained firm in maintaining relentless pressure from the outset. Deepti Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowling attack, claiming three wickets. While Shafali Verma, Shree Charani and Shreyanka Patil picked up two wickets apiece to bowl Sri Lanka out for 69 in 15.4 overs. Notably, this is India’s first gold medal of the competition.
