“I just keep telling him, you will get your opportunities”: Shreyas Iyer urges patience for young blaster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has clearly stated that young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance, with the team management continuing to back the experienced pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson at the top of the order. Coming off a successful Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Sooryavanshi has been unable to find a consistent run in the Indian team. Meanwhile, Indian management has decided to maintain stability at the top of the order rather than rush him into the playing XI.
"So I just keep telling him, you will get your opportunities. You see, there are two batters who have won the World Cup for you, and they've been consistent with the run scoring as well,” Shreyas said at the post-match presentation.
“So, if you be consistent with your processes and your mindset is a bit light, not think too much about getting an opportunity right now. I know what must be going on in his mind, especially after a phenomenal IPL season, but you have to wait sometimes, and we've got two fantastic openers who have been consistent throughout. That's the interaction I basically had with him, right from the Afghanistan series," he added.
Sooryavanshi took the IPL 2026 by storm, churning out a series of impressive performances and amassing 776 runs during the tournament. His extraordinary performances in IPL earned him a call-up to India's T20I squad for the tours of Ireland and England.
However, he failed to replicate IPL form at the international stage. So far, he has only featured in only eight T20 internationals so far, with his selection now largely dependent on the team's combination.
