Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar showered huge praise on South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after his (Bavuma's) sensational knock of 179 against Australia in the second Test at Gqeberha that powered the Proteas to a powerful win. Gavaskar talked about Bavuma’s understated personality and impressive qualities as a leader, asserting that South Africa captain lets his performances speak louder than his celebrations, describing him as someone who does not need to be a “chest-thumper” to make his presence felt. More importantly, Gavaskar compared Bavuma to former Indian cricketers Ajinkya Rahane and Gundappa Vishwanath.

“His record of winning 12 out of the 14 Tests he has captained the Proteas and losing only the first Test of the series is as stellar a record as that of Ajinkya Rahane, under whom India never lost a Test," Gavaskar said while writing in his column for Mid-Day.

“Both aren’t chest-thumpers, nor do they have an army of PR to try and influence the world as to how good they are. Bavuma’s demeanour on the field reminds so much of the much-loved and admired Gundappa Viswanath, who showed that to be a tough cricketer one does not have to swear and rage against the world," Gavaskar added.

Bavuma’s innings against Australia was an example of true resolve, as he stood tall to take his side to an epic win, helping his side level the three-match series 1-1. Notably, under Bavuma’s leadership, South Africa have had a stellar record in Tests, winning 12 of 14 matches. Meanwhile, the third Test between South Africa and Australia will begin on October 27 in Cape Town.
