Gareth Batty to join CSK as assistant coach ahead of IPL 2027

Gareth Batty is all set to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an assistant coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027. In order to serve at CSK, Batty will bring to an end his successful five-year spell as Surrey’s head coach. He will join CSK’s coaching staff under newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan.
Batty carries an impressive coaching record, having played a central role in making Surrey a strong side in English domestic cricket. He was appointed Surrey’s head coach in 2022, and his appointment turned out to be fruitful because he guided the county to the County Championship title in his first season in charge. He also led the side to victories in 2023 and 2024.
“Head coach Gareth Batty is to leave the Club to take up a role with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The Club would like to thank Gareth for overseeing a highly successful period in its history. As head coach, Surrey won three County Championship titles in a row from 2022-2024,” Surrey said in its statement.
Batty will take over the responsibilities from Michael Hussy, whose departure was confirmed by CSK.
“From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family. Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years. Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister. Once a Super King, always a Super King,” CSK said in a statement.
