“He would read the game…”: Faf du Plessis opens up about MS Dhoni’s unconventional captaincy

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has shared his perspective on what made MS Dhoni a tremendously successful captain during their time together at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Faf spent many IPL seasons, playing under Dhoni, and came across firsthand experience of how the legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter approached leadership and dealt with pressure.
Notably, Du Plessis shared a long association with CSK, featuring for the franchise for nine seasons before moving to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2022.
"This guy has an incredible understanding of the game on the field. He doesn't like to plan too much beforehand and prefers to be instinctive during the match. That was his superpower,” Faf said while speaking on the Prakhar Gupta Podcast.
Du Plessis asserted that Dhoni had huge faith in his instincts and addressed the situation as it developed on the field.
“He would read the game and the players while staying remarkably calm, as everyone knows he is a very composed person. That's something I want to take from him and apply to my own captaincy," said Faf.
Overall, Du Plessis has played 154 matches and accumulated 4,773 runs. During his time at CSK, Faf won three titles with the franchise. Meanwhile, under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK clinched five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.
