Aakash Chopra baffled as Shivam Dube remains unused throughout New Zealand T20I series

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has expressed surprise over Shivam Dube not getting a single opportunity in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Despite India taking an unassailable 3-0 lead, the team management did not provide opportunities to several players, including Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Auqib Nabi and Kumar Kushagra. Chopra was particularly disappointed with Dube's continued absence from the playing XI, considering his previous performances in important matches, including the Asian Games final and the ODI series against England.
Speaking to Cricinfo, Chopra said that Dube should not be written off, highlighting his ability to finish matches under pressure.
"Dube played the Asian Games final and scored runs, and he has also played ODI cricket against England. You cannot just say that he is no longer needed. I will be surprised if he is absolutely dislodged. Yes, Nitish Kumar Reddy has done a job. He is a better bowler, but Shivam Dube is a better finisher," Chopra said.
Chopra also compared Dube with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who appears to be ahead in the competition for the pace-bowling all-rounder's position. While acknowledging Reddy's bowling abilities, he believes Dube offers greater value as a finisher.
"What you want from a player is something that might eventually decide your selection. But for that, we must also understand the thought process. Nitish will give you the overs, but Dube will finish games. World Cup finals, Asian Games, Asia Cup – those are the places where Shivam Dube has come into his own. I am in no hurry to write him off," he added.
Meanwhile, India's management has been looking to develop Nitish Kumar Reddy as a pace-bowling all-rounder, particularly with Hardik Pandya facing fitness concerns and extended periods on the sidelines.
The decision to prioritise Reddy's bowling abilities has seemingly affected Dube's opportunities. However, Chopra believes Dube's finishing skills and experience in high-pressure situations make him an important option for India going forward.
