“Gill has to perform”: Former Indian legend on Gill’s dipping form in Test

There has been a massive setback for Shubman Gill who is trying to find his mojo back into the Test and T20I format of the game. Gill hasn’t lived among runs in these formats for a while now. India’s rising star Shubman Gill has failed to meet the expectations posed in him after incorporating him to play the Test series against South Africa. Shubman Gill didn’t live up to the expectations after encountering difficulties in the first Test where he scored (2) and (26) respectively across both innings. Gill failed to exploit the conditions that also cost the team in terms of runs. India lost the first game by an innings and 32 runs.
Amid the failures from Shubman Gill, former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth has said that Gill needs to get into scoring consistently in overseas conditions to prove the kind of stature he carries. Gill’s ODI numbers have been super impressive but the dip in his T20I and Test batting is garnering a lot of attention. In ODIs, Gill finished as the highest run-scorer in 2023 with his 1584 runs.
“Shubman Gill has to perform well across the world. Scoring runs in the sub-continent alone doesn’t help. He has to score runs overseas. Why are we calling Virat Kohli the king? Look at his record, even in the last year, be it Test matches, ODIs or T20Is. Just look at his records. I have nothing more to say. Yes, I accept you can’t produce a Virat Kohli every time. Everybody can’t be producing Virat Kohli. But you have to try and get to at least a bit of that stature,”
“I think the hype around Shubman Gill, quite a few are saying ‘he is the next this, next that’. I think we will have to wait and see. I wouldn’t overrate him, I wouldn’t want to underestimate him.”
