Dean Elgar to retire from professional cricket at the end of 2026 season
Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar has decided to retire from cricket at the end of the 2026 season. The 39-year-old left-hander made the announcement on Wednesday, as he wants to devote more time to his family. Elgar represented South Africa in 86 Test matches, finishing with 5,347 runs at an average of 37.92.
His record included 14 centuries, with his highest Test score of 199 coming against Bangladesh in 2017. He also captained South Africa on 18 occasions, taking charge during a period in which South African cricket was undergoing significant change. His final appearance as captain was against India at Newlands in Cape Town in January 2024.
“I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family. It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids. It’s been a great journey so far. It’s not done yet, but at the end of the season, I will be retiring,” Elgar said in a media release by Essex Cricket.
Following his international retirement, Elgar went on with his career in England, becoming a key figure for Essex in the County Championship. He joined the county as a replacement for former England captain Alastair Cook, who called time on his professional career in 2023.
