Former England captain Michael Vaughan has urged the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to take decisive action against fast bowler Brydon Carse following an alleged nightclub incident. The controversy came up after a video circulated on social media showing Carse being handcuffed by police outside a pub during a night out with Durham teammate Matthew Potts. The incident has also prompted an investigation by the ECB. Carse was not selected for England's playing XI in the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, Leeds.

And the ECB has now confirmed that he would no longer be available for selection for the second Test at Lord's. Vaughan believes the matter should be dealt with firmly if the investigation concludes that Carse was at fault. 

“Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," Vaughan told BBC Radio.

“It’s the only punishment that will really hurt players," he said.

The incident has also forced a change in England's squad for the Lord's Test, with Carse being replaced in the squad by Hampshire right-arm seamer Sonny Baker. Vaughan also felt that Carse should not become a scapegoat for England’s off-field issues.

"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice. I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," Vaughan said.

This incident comes amid disciplinary concerns involving England players. Last year in October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was reportedly punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington during England's tour of New Zealand. Teammates Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present. There was also another notable incident during England's Ashes tour of Australia, when opener Ben Duckett was filmed intoxicated while the team was on holiday in Noosa.
