WTC final, 2025: South Africa eye miraculous recovery after being rocked early by Aussie quicks

South Africa are hoping for a miraculous turnaround after ending day one (Wednesday) of the ongoing World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in deep trouble. The Proteas, reeling at 43 for 4 at stumps in response to Australia’s modest first-innings total of 212, face an uphill battle on day two as they look to stage a revival in this blockbuster showdown.

The day began brightly for South Africa after skipper Temba Bavuma’s decision to bowl after winning the toss under overcast skies was proven to be right by pacer Kagiso Rabada, who made full use of the conditions, delivering a fiery spell to spark the Aussie collapse. He finished with an outstanding five-wicket haul, claiming crucial wickets for the Proteas. Supporting him superbly was Marco Jansen, who claimed three wickets of his own.

Together, the duo tore through Australia’s lineup, bowling them out for just 212. Despite the collapse, veteran batter Steve Smith and Beau Webster ensured Australia had something to fight for, crafting notable innings of 66 and 72, respectively.

Later, Mitchell Starc led Australia’s fightback with the ball, dismissing openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton in quick succession. While Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood got rid of Wiaan Mulder and Tristan Stubbs, respectively. Now, heading into day two on Thursday, South Africa would hope to claw their way back into the match with Bavuma and David Bedingham unbeaten on (3) and (8) respectively.
