South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who crafted a breathtaking unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo’s Queen’s Sports Club, has revealed West Indies legend Brian Lara told him that he should have gone for the 400-run mark. Mulder finished his innings at 367*, reaching a triple century off just 297 balls—the second fastest ever in Test cricket.

With only 33 runs to go to eclipse Brian Lara’s iconic 400*, Mulder made a surprising decision: he declared the innings at lunch, putting Zimbabwe in to bat. Notably, Wiaan Mulder was serving as stand-in skipper in the second Test in the absence of the regular skipper.

"Now that things have settled a little bit, I’ve chatted a little bit to Brian Lara... He said to me, I’m creating my own legacy, and I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken, and he wishes if I’m ever in that position again, I actually go and score more than what he had," Mulder told SuperSport.

“That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing, and respecting the game is the most important part for me," he added.

Lara's 400* remains the highest score in Test cricket. Talking about the game, South Africa won the game by an innings and 236 runs, sweeping the series 2-0.
