The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new captain of Pakistan’s ODI team, replacing Mohammad Rizwan. The announcement came shortly after the conclusion of the first day of the ongoing second Test match between Pakistan and South Africa at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Notably, both Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi are featuring in the second Test.

"A meeting of the selection committee, also attended by Pakistan's white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, decided that Shaheen will lead Pakistan's ODI side against South Africa," the official PCB release stated.

Afridi will take charge of the ODI squad for the first time when Pakistan host South Africa in a three-match ODI series beginning November 4. Mohammad Rizwan’s tenure as white-ball captain began in October 2024 and brought with it immediate success. Under his leadership, Pakistan secured a historic ODI series victory over Australia, their first bilateral ODI series win on Australian soil in 22 years.

However, recent performances appear to have influenced the board’s decision. Pakistan endured a disappointing start to 2025, culminating in a shock early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil. With Shaheen taking over as the ODI captain, Pakistan now have three different captains for three formats, with Shan Masood and Salman Ali Agha being at the helm of Test and T20I teams.
