Former Sri Lanka cricketer and batting star Kumar Sangakkara has been appointed Rajasthan Royals' head coach for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Along with being the head coach, Sangakkara will also be serving in his longstanding role as the franchise's Director of Cricket.

Sangakkara, who previously coached Rajasthan Royals between 2021 and 2024, steps back in to replace Rahul Dravid, who departed after a single season. Under Sangakkara's leadership, RR reached the final in 2022 and made it to the playoffs in 2024.

"As we looked at what the team needed at this stage, we felt that his familiarity within the squad, his leadership and his deep understanding of the Royals culture would bring the right balance of continuity and stability," Manoj Badale, the lead owner of the franchise, said.

"Kumar has always had our complete trust as a leader. His clarity, calmness and cricketing intelligence will play an important role in guiding the squad into this next phase."

Recently, Rajasthan Royals struck a deal with Chennai Super Kings, swapping Sanju Samson for all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
