Harshit Rana punished by the ICC, handed one demerit point
Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has been reprimanded by the ICC for breaching the ICC's Code of Conduct during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. One demerit point was added to his disciplinary record for his gesture at South African batter Dewald Brevis after dismissing him.
Harshit was punished after being found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
The incident happened in the 22nd over of South Africa's innings. After Rana dismissed Dewald Brevis, caught at deep point by Ruturaj Gaikwad, he directed a gesture towards the dressing room. Match officials judged the send-off as provocative. Since this is his first offence in the last 24 months, the matter was resolved without a formal hearing.
