England’s batting legend Joe Root has added another tremendous achievement to his remarkable Test career, bringing up his 41st Test century on day two of the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. With the latest hundred, Root has now drawn level with Australian legend Ricky Ponting in third place on the all-time men’s Test hundreds list.

Root’s achievement came as England looked to build a competitive first innings against a strong Australian attack. Resuming on 72, Root played carefully, reaching triple figures in 146 deliveries, slamming 11 fours in a masterful knock. This was Root’s second century of this Ashes series and only his second in Australia.

The all-time Test century chart is led by Sachin Tendulkar (51) and Jacques Kallis (45), with Ponting and Root jointly holding third place with 41 hundreds each.
