Bangladesh decline to travel to India to play T20I World Cup 2026
Bangladesh have declined to travel to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing concern "regarding the safety and security" of their players. The decision comes in the wake of increasingly strained political relations between the two neighboring countries. The issue gained further attention after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad.
"Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions," the BCB said in a statement.
"In light of this decision, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC), as the event authority, to consider relocating all of Bangladesh's matches to a venue outside India."
Under the tournament schedule, Bangladesh’s matches in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup were set to be played in Kolkata and Mumbai. Their opening fixture against West Indies was scheduled for February 7 at Eden Gardens. Notably, the T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Pakistan are already scheduled to play all of their T20I matches in Sri Lanka following bitter relations with India.
