"He’s the highest wicket taker in SA20": Dale Steyn raises questions over Baartman's omission from the T20 WC squad

Former South African fast-bowling great Dale Steyn has questioned South Africa’s decision to leave Ottneil Baartman out of their squad for the upcoming T20I World Cup 2026, noting that Baartman has been one of the most consistent performers with the ball. Baartman’s omission is surprising given his role in South Africa’s impressive run to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, where they lost against India. So far, he has featured in 11 of South Africa’s 29 T20I matches and is currently the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing SA20.
"We really need to start looking at Baartman as one of SA’s best white ball bowlers," Steyn wrote on X.
"He’s the highest wicket taker in SA20, won the league twice and made a final, let me remind you, that’s a comp that has 4 INTERNATIONAL players (often batters) plus all the PROTEAS! He’s number 1."
"Thats TOP quality, but he’ll be sitting home for this years 20/20 WC."
South Africa in their squad have loaded up on pacers, bringing in six fast bowlers - Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Anrich Nortje – putting their faith in a pace-heavy formula. Meanwhile, South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign on February 9 by taking on Canada.
