Damien Martyn discharged from hospital, Adam Gilchrist provides positive update

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has shared an update on the health of former teammate Damien Martyn, confirming that the ex-cricketer has been discharged from hospital and is recovering after a serious bout of meningitis.
Martyn was admitted to Gold Coast University Hospital on December 27 after falling critically ill. The 54-year-old’s condition was initially severe enough that doctors placed him in an induced coma. Adam Gilchrist confirmed the good news that Martyn has now been discharged from hospital.
“The wonderful news is that he has been released from hospital. It’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support,” Adam Gilchrist said on Kayo Sports during the fifth Ashes Test.
“The word from the medical staff was the ambulance officers who treated him as soon as they saw him could not have done it any more perfectly, which nipped the infection in the bud. He still has a bit of a journey to go, it was extreme, but great news.”
Martyn played a key role in Australia’s success in both Test and ODI formats, featuring in multiple Ashes campaigns and World Cup squads. He amassed over 4,400 Test runs and more than 5,300 ODI runs during a glittering international career. He appeared for Australia in 67 Tests, 208 ODIs and 4 T20Is.
